Strojnik Books Now Available!

Alex Strojnik's excellent three-book series on Laminar Aircraft is now available here! These books are a "must read" for any serious aircraft designer and/or constructor, and virtually a mandatory reference text for any complete aircraft design library.

The aircraft pictured above, Laminar Magic, was designed to prove that with attention to detail in the areas of surface preparation and proper shape ("laminar flow" or micro-aerodynamics), higher speeds can be acheived on much less power than most aircraft require. Ultimately this results in reduced cost and improved performance for the aviation enthusiast. Laminar Magic was the culmination of the design process detailed in Alex's books.

All three books are intended for serious designers and constructors. A wealth of illustrations, graphs, and diagrams add depth and understanding to the text. At 8-1/2 by 11 inches the format is easy to read and packs in a lot of information. Throughout the text, Alex's dry wit and enthusiasm come through, adding fun to the conceptual information.

Regarding plans for Dr. Strojnik's S-2 motorglider: I have received several inquiries recently about plans. Unfortunately they have not been available for many years.

In the latter years of his life Dr. Strojnik became quite concerned about the potential liability associated with selling plans for his designs. For the little bit of revenue the sales generated, it was just not worth it for him to continue making the plans available. His widow continues to share those concerns.

I have seen plans for sale by previous purchasers, in classified ads in Sport Aviation and on the web at sites like Barnstormers.com. I have not looked for any recently, but posting a “want ad” might be helpful.

Dr. Strojnik’s books are essentially expanded versions of his notes and calculations made during design and construction of his aircraft. From those books you can glean most of the details of the design. More importantly, however, I think you will gain tremendous insight into the design process, the trade-offs involved, and an appreciation for the gains to be had through attention to detail in design.
